bishop amboAkbayan commends the bravery of Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio “Ambo” David in protecting the witnesses of Kian Delos Santos’ killing and taking in the father of the witnesses into the church’s custody.

On Saturday, a stand-off was started by the Public Attorneys Office (PAO), the Philippine National Police-Center for Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) and the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) in Caloocan City when they insisted on the father of the witnesses to remove the children from the protection of the Church.

The standoff in Caloocan shows that PAO and PNP-CIDG is unfit to provide the safety and security needed by the witnesses and their families. Their act of forcing the witnesses to be under their custody reveals that they have detrimental interest over the case of Kian delos Santos. The government’s program is a Witness Prevention Program as it prevents truth and justice from the victims and feeds the witnesses to the lion’s den.

Akbayan is with Caloocan Bishop Virgilio David in leading the campaign to stop the killings and start the healing, by building a human-rights based alternative and health-centered approach to the murderous War on Drugs.###

dutertenarcolistAkbayan Partylist condemns President Rodrigo Duterte’s denial of his policy to kill under the War on Drugs.

Duterte, in a press conference on September 5, attacked Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros after her call-out against PNP’s policy to kill under his War on Drugs. Duterte said: “Does the killing of two people make a policy? Ang bobo naman niyan”.

“President Duterte, the killings have reached 8,000 under your regime. This proves your policy to kill is real,” Akbayan President Machris Cabreros said.

“President Duterte’s orders to kill are undeniable as he has made this public in many occasions even in front of the Chief PNP. The attempt of denying is futile. He’s basically lying through his teeth,” Akbayan President Machris Cabreros said.

stop the killingsGroups continue the call for justice for Kian and all victims of state-sponsored killings as they offered poems and lit candles on Friday, Kian's ninth day since police shot him in a drug raid.

The gathering called "9 Tula Para Kay Kian" is attended by members of Akbayan Youth, Youth Resist, Student Council Alliance of the Philippines and Millennials Against Dictators and  allied organizations  and individuals. The groups protested statements from the Philippine National Police (PNP) in a Senate hearing yesterday that they gathered reports about Kian's 'drug involvement' from social media.

"PNP's testimony yesterday proves that this drug war is an injustice to the poor. It's alarming that for the police it's fake news that determines a person's fate, not the courts anymore," Akbayan Youth Secretary General Shamah Bulangis said.“

duterte 2Akbayan partylist condemns Duterte's public threat to shoot human rights groups. The threat comes at a time when Oplan Tokhang has reached its bloodiest and human rights groups are needed to watch over the government's operations.

This statement is in response to Duterte's threat on Wednesday in a Volunteers against Crime and Corruption (VACC) event that he'll order police to shoot down human rights advocates who are critical of his murderous anti-drug campaign.

"Duterte has made killing machines out of our police force and now he's ordered them to train its sights on human rights groups," Akbayan President Machris Cabreros said.

Duterte's police operations have caused an uproar with 32 people killed in Bulacan in 24 hours on Tuesday and 19 killed in Manila on Wednesday. Akbayan Cong Tom Villarin in his statement has called out the raid killings.

cayetanoAkbayan Party-list slammed Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Cayetano for toeing China’s false claims that reclamation has ceased in the West Philippine Sea.

The statement is in response to photos from Washington think-tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) showing that China’s reclamation activities in the disputed West Philippine Sea still continued beyond 2015, debunking the claims of Cayetano and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The latest report dated August 5, 2017 show that China continues to reclaim land farther north of the South China Sea in the Paracel islands.

“With these latest reports showing China’s continuing expansion, Cayetano is caught, pants down, on his false claims submitting to China’s position,” Akbayan Party President Machris Cabreros said.
